GOGEBIC RANGE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
Annual Meeting, at the Elk & Hound Restaurant, Ironwood, MI
September 22, 2011 11:30am
Following a delicious lunch period, President,
Gary Harrington, called the meeting to order at 12:14 P.M.
Board members present:
Gary Harrington, Diane Egan, Karen Bielawski,
Dwight Filippini and Tim Egan.
Absent with notification:
Gail Speer.
Also in attendance were:
Bruce Cox, Carol Forslund, and Linda
Harrington.
Gary extended a warm welcome to all.
Gary and Diane counted the ballots and Gary
announced a unanimous vote for the re-election of Tim Egan for a three-year
term.
Everyone expressed his or her congratulations.
Tim moved to keep our present officers for 2011-2012; seconded by Karen; motion
carried.
Correspondence/Announcements:
Two copies of “Rockland, The Opera” and “The
Rockland Season” booklets from Peter Van Pelt, Executive Director, Pine Mountain
Music Festival, were donated.
One copy of each booklet will go to the
Ironwood Historical Society and the Gogebic Roots Genealogical Society.
Treasurer’s Report:
Dwight reported our income and expenses for
August; leaving a balance of $3,843.14.
A motion by Karen, seconded by Diane, to file
the report for audit; motion carried.
Gary welcomed the Board to celebrate the 2011 Holidays with a gathering at his
home; more information will follow at a later date.
There being no further business, Diane moved, Karen seconded, to adjourn at
12:33 P.M.

Motion by Gail, seconded by Karen, to accept the May 11, 2011 minutes as
printed; motion carried.
Correspondence/Announcements:
(1) Dwight provided an email dated 08/09/2011 indicating receipt and acceptance
by the IRS of Form 990-N; (2) Federation of Genealogical Societies brochure for
the Conference to be held in Springfield, IL on September 7-10, 2011.
Treasurer's Report:
Dwight presented a verbal accounting for May 2011 thru July 2011; leaving a
balance of $3,946.73 in our account.
A motion by Diane, seconded by Karen, to file the report for audit and any
outstanding bills are to be paid; motion carried..
Committee Reports:
Research: Karen
reported that the volume of inquiries is steady.
Website:
Gail reported that everything is running smoothly and updating will be done
today.
Programs:
Any suggestions for topics/speakers would be appreciated.
Newsletter:
Gary will prepare a Newsletter within the next week.
Obits:
Karen is up-to-date on replies and Diane has input obits thru August 8th,
2011.
Membership:
Membership renewal notices are sent one month prior to expiration with members
added/up-dated on our active membership list as payments are received.
Cemetery:
Dwight reported no activity at present.
Nominating Committee:
Gail reported that Tim has volunteered to be placed on the slate of proposed
Board members.
Old Business: The Pioneer Recognition Program was tabled.
New Business:The Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday,
September 22, 2011, at the Elk & Hound Restaurant, Country Club Road, Ironwood,
MI, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Due to time constraints, there probably will
not be a program.

Karen, to accept the October 6, 2010 minutes as printed; motion carried.
Correspondence/Announcements:
(1) Dwight distributed the
items received over the winter months; (2) Announcement from the Northern Waters
Genealogical Society of a Czech, Irish, and French Canadian Heritage program
scheduled for June 4th at the Community Center in Presque Isle, WI;
(3) Brochure from the Federation of Genealogical Societies for their Conference
to be held in Springfield, IL on September 7-10, 2011; and (4) the various
requests for information recently received.
Treasurer's Report:
Dwight presented an itemized
accounting for October 2010 thru April 2011; leaving a balance of $3,908.74. A motion by Diane, seconded by Gail,
to file the report for audit.
Committee Reports:
Research: Karen reported that the volume slows
during the winter season.
Website:
Gail announced an increase
in her rates to $50.00 per hour.
Dwight moved, Karen seconded, that we keep our Webmaster at the increased rate
of $50.00 per hour; motion carried.
Discussion on posting events held by other societies on our website was held. Karen moved, Dwight seconded, that we
post events being held by the Northern Waters Genealogical Society if they will
advertise the obituary services done by Gogebic Roots Genealogical Society and
also increase our Webmaster services by one hour per quarter; motion carried.
Programs:
June 11th at 2:00
P.M. will be a program on Immigration/They Came in Ships to be presented by
Carol Williams and held at the Bessemer Heritage Center. Set up will be at 1:00 P.M. The Board will provide snacks and
refreshments. Topic suggestions for
a September or October program would be appreciated.
Newsletter:
Gary has a Newsletter ready
to placed on our website.
Obits:
Karen has received some
payments in a “hit-and-miss” fashion and if requests are not paid for within
three months, they will automatically be removed from the active list. Diane continues to input the obits
from the Ironwood Daily Globe.
Membership:
Membership renewal notices
are being sent one month prior to expiration by Diane and the members are
added/up-dated on our active membership list as Dwight receives payments.
Cemetery:
Dwight reported no activity
at present and expressed his willingness to do rubbings or research if
requested. Gary will check into the
availability of a special paper for doing tombstone rubbings.
Old Business: The cost of subscribing to
Newspaper Archives will be sent to Dwight, who in turn, will reimburse Karen for
this expenditure (a motion was made and seconded by the Board on June 2, 2010 to
this effect).
Gary will draw up a rough
draft for a Pioneer Recognition Program.
New Business:Payments for obit requests
via Paypal are becoming more plentiful, but there is still some confusion as to
the exact amount to be paid.

Old Business: Gary reported that births in the State of Michigan must be over 100 years old in
order for the clerks at the Court Houses to look them up for you..
New Business: A discussion was held on establishing a Pioneer Recognition Program and this
will be on the Agenda for 2011.
There will be no meeting in November.
Gary reminded
the Board of the December 1st Christmas Celebration to be held at his home at
11:00 A.M.
The Board extended
thanks to Gary and Linda for their generosity.

Gary
extended a warm welcome to all.
A lunch
break was taken.
Our next
Board meeting will be October 6th, 10:00 A.M., at the Bessemer
Heritage Center, in Bessemer, Michigan.
A Christmas get-together was discussed and through the generosity of
Linda and Gary, this will be held on December 1st, 11:00 A.M., at
their home.
Gail
suggested the members be notified via email of our Annual Meeting and other
events that may be planned.
Gary is in
the process of putting together a Newsletter and if anyone wishes to contribute
an article to send it to him.
After
counting the votes, Gary announced the following Bylaw change was passed:

shall constitute a quorum.
Diane
counted the votes and announced the unanimous vote for the re-election of Karen

and this will be placed on our website.
Obits:
Karen has received many requests for
information and one contained approximately 50 names. Diane continues to input the obits
weekly from the Ironwood Daily Globe.
Membership:
Diane is sending Membership renewal notices one month prior to expiration and
the members are added/up dated on our active membership list as Dwight receives
payments.
Cemetery:
Dwight reported no activity at
present and the Board discussed the possibility of doing some work in the
Ironwood Cemetery.
Nominating Committee:
Tim and Dwight reported that Karen
and Gary have volunteered to be placed on the slate of proposed Board members,
which leaves one more person needed.
Old Business:
Gary will handle the reservations at Elk & Hound for our Annual Meeting. Diane will send a copy of the Call to
Meeting, Board Members’ Ballot, and Bylaw Change Ballot to Gary and Gail. These will be put onto our website
will the hope that all members will vote.
Our next meeting (Annual Meeting) is scheduled for September 16th –
11:00 A.M. – at the Elk & Hound Restaurant.

with passwords and id’s for our website and the original copy was filed. She also mentioned that it is
necessary to make our website renewal payments in time or the website would be
erased. Dwight requested an invoice
be made by Gail so all charges can be brought up-to-date.
Programs:
Gail will contact Sharon
Cook (her great-grandmother perished with the Lady Elgin on Lake Michigan), and
Dwight will contact Jim Ghellar (of the Bessemer Historical Society and Piave
Society), as a possible speaker/s for the Annual Meeting. The Board decided to send a post card
to all members announcing the Annual Meeting once the speaker and date have been
established.

Gary has plans to publish

Diane continues to input
the obits weekly from the Ironwood Daily Globe and Karen reported via email that

Website: Following a discussion, Diane moved
and Tim seconded, that Gail invoice us quarterly for the monthly charge of
$40.00 to maintain our website.

pleased that our website continues to run smoothly.
Programs: Gary attended a Consortium meeting in
Ishpeming, MI and returned with no new ideas for a program on mining. Possible ideas for future meetings
were discussed and suggestions are welcome.
Newsletter: Gary will continue to write our
Newsletters and welcomes input from all of our members.
Obits: Diane reported that obits thru May
15, 2010 have been input. Gail has
January thru July 2006 done and will continue as soon as information is
available on the Internet. The
process of payment via Paypal is running smoothly.
Membership: Diane is
sending Membership renewal notices one month prior to expiration. Payment of dues can now be made via
Paypal.
Cemetery: Gary will help with Ironwood cemetery
research and Dwight will do the same for the Bessemer cemetery. A special paper is available to do
tombstone rubbings with the use of the paper and a tennis ball.
Old Business:
A group subscription to
Godfrey Memorial Library in CT. is not available was reported by Gary. Following a discussion, Gail moved,
seconded by Dwight, that when Karen’s present subscription to Newspaper Archives
expires, GRGS will pay for her Scholar Blue Package subscription to Godfrey
Memorial Library; motion carried.
Diane will check as to the expiration date of Karen’s subscription.
Dwight reported that an
E-filing receipt has been received from the IRS notifying that our 990-N form
for 2008 has been accepted. This
form is necessary to maintain our non-profit status.
New Business:
A tentative Annual Meeting
date of September 16th, 11:00 A.M. at the Elk & Hound Restaurant was
set.
For security purposes, Gail
will provide the Board with passwords and id’s for our website at our next
meeting.

Website – Karen and Dwight expressed thanks to Gail as Paypal has made
responding to obits and corresponding payments for them flow more smoothly.
2.
Cemetery – No report.
3.
Newsletter – Gary has prepared one for April and is continuing with the
Enlistment Records for Company 1, Third Infantry, of the Michigan National
Guard. Also to be included is a
“searching for” section and items of local history. Anyone having items they wish to
contribute, please contact Gary.
4.
Obit/s – Karen has been busy processing the many requests. Also see #1. Diane will continue to input the
obits from the Ironwood Daily Globe.
5.
Membership – Diane has sent notices to expired memberships and also those that
come up for renewal thru June. The
Board decided to mail renewals if the email addresses fail to work.
6.
Program/s – Any suggestions for programs would be appreciated and can be
directed to any Board member.
New Business:
A discussion was held on future programs.
Dwight will check into the possibility of a speaker on Italian Heritage
and Gary will do the same for Mines/Mining.
The Board welcomes any, and all, suggestions.
Gail reported that payments for obit requests are accepted via check/s, credit
card/s and Paypal. International
payments can now also be made thru Paypal.
A big thank you was extended to Gail for her enthusiasm and dedication in
helping our website to be a success.
Old Business:
Karen stated that the charge for subscribing to Newspaper Archives was
approximately $119.00 per year and Gary stated for Godfrey Memorial Library it
was approximately $80.00 per year.
Information on various types of memberships for each will be researched for our
next meeting.
Our next scheduled meetings are:
June 2nd and July 7th at 10:00 A.M. at the Bessemer
Heritage Center.
